Your resume isn’t the problem…  This is!

Resume Time….  Some people (well most people) shudder at the thought of wheeling this bit of paper out and let’s face it it’s only ever done when needed.

With those kinds of feelings, confidence with the “necessary document” is a distant dream.

Feeling it’s the biggest problem when it comes to landing the perfect job.

It’s too long, too detailed, doesn’t read right or doesn’t pack that “I am the one” punch!

But is it…  Is it the problem?

COVID has brought about significant change to life in general but especially for employment.

As we head into the new year and for the months that follow, there will be a substantial shift and movement within the industry.

So if you are a middle or senior manager looking for a new position the time to get yourself into the right position, get those ducks in a row, is NOW!

But Why...  Why does it have to be now?

That’s simple…  You need to be ready now for when the “ideal” position comes up and you can apply immediately without the stress of trying to get yourself and everything that supports you ready in a hurry!

So in answer to the above question:  No… your resume is never the real problem…

It’s actually so much more deeper than a document.

It’s more about your outlook, your layering system AND your strategies and I am going to shed some light on the mechanisms involved and what you need to be able to change and gain employment in your “optimal position”.

So let’s start with the:

Layers of Change…

The change you are chasing is “ideally” a job that’s challenging, fulfilling, paying you a salary based on your worth and naturally a level above your current position, after all that’s the biggest change you’re embarking on.

So...

Layer one: Tactics & Strategy

Changing a position, from this perspective, the first thing we automatically do is channel our inner “Road Runner” and with haste begin work on our resume.

“Have to fix the resume, have to get it all aligned, updated, re-formatted…”  Ahhhhhhhhhhh!

The thing is you can have all the strategies and all the tactics in the world, you can activate your network and brush up your LinkedIn profile and top it all off with the best interview training in the world.

None of that will work. If you don't have the second layer, right, which is…

Layer two: Mindset

You need to change your mindset so it is aligned with the direction you are wanting to go and the vision you have for your career.  You will not be able to accomplish a bigger and more challenging role if you are stuck in the same mindset of a smaller or less challenging position.

There is still another layer that is the most important and without acknowledging and amending this, layers one and two mean nothing and that is...

Layer three: Identity

Doing what you feel you should be doing or taking it back to childhood where you have your blueprint of behaviour and a boot load of excess baggage that you have carried through your various positions (most likely picking up a few more suitcases along the way) impacting you, your decisions and the way you behave.

So it's a crucial part to unravel your identity and understand who you are, what drives you and what values are at your core.

You need to take the time to unravel and understand your career DNA.

So ask yourself:

  • Who are you really, at your core?
  • Who are you minus the years of programming layers?
  • Who are you representing?
  • What does being a leader mean to you?
  • How can you connect again with who you truly are?

Digging deep and answering those questions will get you fired up and your passion for the job will shine through resonating with anybody you’re in front of.

Now, if you’ve been following me for a while, you might have heard me talking about the “strategic vs tactical approach” when you want to step up in your career.

Well, this is true of your resume also.

You could find that when you spend time in a more tactical world you tend to lean more toward the hands-on approach.

Here are some examples: you get the job done, you’re on time and leave late, you take on extra work helping everyone out (except for you!)....etc. (Sounds familiar?)

The thing is, if you are wanting to step up in your career, a “tactical” resume isn’t going to fly anymore.

You need to think more strategically and in line with the desired position.

It’s important to remember that you need to peel back the layers and change the way you communicate on your resume, LinkedIn profile and at interviews.

Re-examine how you talk about yourself and how you perceive yourself because what you reflect on others is what they will hold on to.

It’s time to mash it up!

Once you know and understand the dynamics of change, the tactical aspect of the job and the strategic leadership part, it’s time to get shifting.

It’s important to refocus and believe that you embody a sought-after leader.

Moving through those points it’s probably easier to read than do but once you have completed the steps then you are ready.

Ready to compile your leadership resume.

Firstly, it’s about understanding your “UVP” Unique Value Proposition and what it offers over any other candidate? And if you don't know that then how will they..?  So work it out and understand what makes you unique in the world.

Secondly, what’s your pitch?  You need to bring your UVP and everything else you have discovered through this process and pitch it clearly and concisely.

Thirdly, resume…  You are now ready to start creating your resume.  It will flow on from your pitch which is the foundation you build from so try and keep your resume in line with that.
