What's WRONG with your resume.
(For Senior Managers / Directors / Heads Of / Executives)
Today I want to give you an outline of the perfect resume for your next leadership role.
The reason being, I've just reviewed the resume of a general manager, and to be honest, there was a LOT he needed to change.
The thing is, other people had already reviewed the resume and thought it was good, but it wasn’t working.
It wasn’t getting him interviews.
So what to change?
I want to make one thing very clear from the start.
When you're at a high level, a senior level - so that could be a manager with over 15 years experience, a senior manager, a head of, a general manager or any executive you might be - everybody at your level has a great skillset and loads of experience.
So you need to really take it a notch up to stand out.
But how? I hear you ask.
First of all, is by having a definite message, or elevator pitch.
It needs to be crystal clear as this will be the key driver of your resume, your LinkedIn profile and the interviews you will do.
It's a key driver to introduce yourself to a CEO or superiors.
And the reason it is important is because it is this message that communicates the value you can create.
However, a lot of people don't know how to create that message.
I've seen a lot of resumes through my 12 years' experience and most don't have it.
You will build your competitive advantage if you incorporate it, because it's that message, if it's clear and concise, that will resonate with the right people and repel the those that don't match the job you're looking for.
So basically, when I'm talking about the perfect resume, there are two components:
Number 1: Your layout.
Don't make your resume text-heavy. It needs to be simple, professional, scannable and compelling.
Stop fiddling around with little things.
Stop making it in a pretty template.
Plain, slick - that’s it.
This is far more important than you might realise and the wrong layout could have your resume flicked swiftly onto the “No” pile,
Number 2. The content.
You need to create your message and make sure it’s readable through your resume, so you demonstrate the calibre of candidate you are, the salary you're looking for and the value you can create for an organisation.
The content needs to be compelling enough for me to pick up the phone, there and then, and say, “I want you in for an interview!”
That's basically what your resume needs to do - get you an interview. If it doesn't get you the interview, it's not doing its job.
