How To Survive As An Introvert At Work
3 Tips To Shine In Your Career When You Are An Introvert At Work.
You are a quiet achiever, who gets things done, loves to laugh and are social with your colleagues… but when it comes to talking about yourself, your results and achievements at work, you have nothing to say.
Not because there is nothing, but because it feels so uncomfortable.
It feels like you're bragging about your achievements or blowing your own trumpet.
It has probably held you back in the past. It might have been in an interview for a job you really wanted, a job review where you wanted to secure a pay increase or in a meeting where you wanted to give your input.
Every time it's the same story, you have sweaty palms, you stumble and waffle over your words and you turn bright red...
Pure agony!
The truth is, if you want to get noticed and step up in your job and career, you need to take control of this. I'm going to share 3 tips with you that helped me take back control.
1. MINDSET
The first one is to change your mindset.
We all have a little voice in our head that gives us ideas that aren't necessarily true. So your job is to get aware of those ideas and recognise that they might be filling your mind with lies.
Lies like “you're not good enough” or “what you’re going to say is stupid”.
Because when you listen to that little voice inside, it will affect your confidence. Your voice will start to shake and you will lose control.
A little story here: ‘One of my clients is a senior manager and looking after multiple teams and multi-million dollar budgets.
She is ruthless and pretty successful in what she does but when she has a meeting with her senior executives and board of directors, she feels like a little girl.
The voice in her head keeps saying “you shouldn't be here, what are you doing here?” time and time again it made her insecure and unconfident.
Point is, the first thing you need to do is get your mind aligned with who you are.
2. STRUCTURE
Secondly, structure your thoughts. Before you worry about what you are going to say and how you are going to articulate it, write down every result and achievement you have had.
When you have written it down, structure it in a way you are comfortable saying it.
Please remember, there is nothing wrong with telling the results you achieved on a project. It's the way you say it that will make all the difference.
And I'm sure, by writing it down you will make sure it's not at all over the top, you’ll probably still find ways to tone it down.
3. STRENGTHS
Thirdly, embrace it as a strength rather than a weakness.
The truth is, you would probably hate working in an environment that’s over the top.
Where you would have to work with colleagues that are eagerly telling their results and achievements to anyone who’s willing to listen.
So, you want to attract organisations and people that will value what you have to offer without shouting it from the rooftops.
Being an introvert is not a weakness and it’s not holding you back from anything.
By following these three tips you will be able to take control and take your career to the next level.
