Executive Job Search In Australia

The Executive Job Search.

If you’re not able to navigate this competitive job market or stand out in the sea of other applicants, you’ll miss out on potentially great opportunities because you’ll never get considered.

I don’t want this for you so, here’s the thing...

If you’re still going about it the old way, you need to level up. There are new and far better ways to land your dream job.

Tap into them and you’ll soon be working in a job where you’re recognised, respected and valued.

That’s career fulfilment.

Old Way vs New Way

Traditionally, the job search process looks a little like this:

I update my resume, scroll through job boards, reach out to people I know, and hit apply when a good-enough prospect lands my way. Then I sit and wait.

The old way of doing things leaves us feeling despondent and frustrated because we are largely sitting in the passenger seat. We’re waiting for opportunities to happen to us.

Now imagine, a new way of doing things:

I understand what sets me apart in the market – my unique selling point.

I have an elevator pitch and know how to market myself authentically.

My resume and LinkedIn profile highlight my points of difference.

I’ve diversified my job search and network, and I’ve honed my skills for nailing the interview.

The secret to landing your next executive role where you feel challenged, fulfilled and are paid what you are worth lies in these three steps….

STEP ONE: CLARITY

We need to be clear about WHY someone should hire or promote you. If you want to be recognised as a leader in your field, you need to develop a huge dose of self-awareness.

You need to own who you are and be responsible for both your strengths and weaknesses.

The following activities will help you gain clarity:

// Career mapping – complete an audit of your education, skills and experiences to gain clarity on how you can best position yourself in the market.

// Values – understand what you believe in and how you want to be represented – this will help you to identify work you’ll find fulfilling.

// Unique Value Proposition – craft your UVP and your pitch based on your career mapping and your values.

STEP TWO: LEADERSHIP BRAND

Your personal brand should reflect your leadership capabilities (aka Leadership Brand) and how you wish to present yourself.

It is communicated to hiring managers via your resume, cover letter and LinkedIn profile.

Once you have crafted your pitch in Step 1, writing your resume should come easily.

Your resume should attract ideal positions for you, and repel the positions that aren’t a good fit.

The cover letter needs to complement the resume, and your LinkedIn profile should be optimised and complement your resume.

STEP THREE: STRATEGY

Many of us make career choices without a clear strategy.

This isn’t surprising, since it’s not something that is often taught in school, nor is it something we grow up learning.

To win at your career choices, you need to know the rules of the game.

It isn’t enough to implement and execute. You need a strategy.

A career strategy involves diversifying your job search and honing your interview techniques and negotiation skills.

It is about learning how to position yourself and having a clear roadmap to get to your ideal career.

Even if you are currently employed in a stop-gap job, you need to know what your next steps are and what skills or experiences you need to cultivate in order to build your career intentionally.

A QUICK NOTE ON CAREER FULFILLMENT

To feel fulfilled in your career, you need;

1. to be in a job that feels authentic to you (where you can be yourself and work with like-minded people),

2. rewards you well for your work (because your reward is directly linked to the impact which you can make),

3. and provides you with both challenges and a sense of fulfilment.

If these three elements are not balanced you will feel stuck and undervalued, and it may be time to take action to get you closer to your dream career.

ACTION STEPS

Complete a career audit, and prioritise what you need to work on.

Is it…

// Your unique value proposition and your pitch?

// Your Leadership Brand?

// Your career strategy?
